Whizz up this delicious lemon apple spinach smoothie in under 5 minutes. Hemp seed hearts add an extra creamy hit of protein and omega-3’s.
This banana based green smoothie is sweet, juicy, tangy and filling. Great for breakfast or a mid morning snack.
What you’ll need
To make this spinach apple smoothie, you’ll need a paring knife to chop the ingredients and a blender (of course) for blending.
I like to use a high-speed blender that’s perfect for whipping up smoothies, soups and sauces really quick, but it doesn’t need to be super expensive.
Ingredients and substitutions
It’s easy to create variations of this recipe by substituting ingredients.
A fab substitution for spinach is pak choi or rainbow chard. These are also light and mild tasting which makes them an easy choice for smoothies.
Switch up the citrus flavour by swapping out the lemon for lime.
You could add a thumb size piece of fresh ginger, grated, to kick up the flavour even more.
If you’re not a fan of bananas, try using frozen cauliflower pieces instead. Frozen cauliflower is also mild tasting and adds a creamy texture to smoothies.
Chia seeds would make a great swap for the hemp seeds as they too are high in protein and omega-3’s.
This recipe is raw, vegan, gluten-free, dairy free with no added sugar. To sweeten this apple spinach smoothie further add a medjool date. Dates add a whole host of mineral goodness.
Just remember to remove the pit before popping it into the blender with the rest of your ingredients.
Apples - crisp, sweet and delicious. I used a Pink Lady apple shown in the picture. A good green apple variety to use is a Granny Smith as they have a sweet and slightly zingy flavour.
Hemp seed hearts - these add a healthy vegan source of omega-3 and protein. Hemp seeds are full of health benefits. This article on hemp seeds is a great resource >> https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323037
Banana - naturally high in fibre, potassium and vitamin c. Bananas make your smoothie thick and creamy.
Lemon - gives this smoothie its refreshingly tangy, citrus taste.
Spinach - a great source of vitamins K, A and C as well as containing calcium and iron.
To freeze bananas peel them then slice into rounds. Place the rounds onto a tray in a single layer and pop them into the freezer.
When completely frozen, take the slices out of the tray and pop the fruit into a zip lock bag to store in the freezer until you want to use them.
Spinach blends easily with fruits and other vegetables so is perfect in green smoothies. You can use frozen spinach if you want to.
This smoothie is best enjoyed immediately to benefit the most from the fresh raw ingredients.
If needed, it can be stored in the fridge for a few hours in a lidded container. The lemon juice will keep the smoothie a bright green colour for a while.
