This spinach apple banana smoothie is tangy and filling. It’s great for breakfast, a mid morning or afternoon snack. It’s also raw, vegan, gluten-free and dairy free with no added sugar.
I find that spinach is the perfect leafy green to use in green smoothies as it’s very mild tasting and blends easily with fruits and vegetables. Especially good if you don’t like greens or are just starting out trying green smoothies.
This apple banana spinach smoothie is my absolute favourite smoothie with apples and spinach! I hope you love it as much as I do. 🙂
What you’ll need
A high-speed blender is perfect for whipping up smoothies and it doesn’t need to be a super expensive one. If you have a food processor with an s-blade that will work too.
You’ll also need a paring knife to chop the ingredients and a chopping board.
Ingredients
- Apple - crisp, sweet and delicious. Use any apples. I love the bright green Granny Smith variety with their tangy, slightly sweet flavour.
- Hemp seed hearts - these will add a healthy vegan source of omega-3 and protein. Hemp seeds are full of health benefits. They also help to make this one smooth and creamy! 🙂
- Banana - naturally high in fibre, potassium and vitamin c. Bananas will help to make your smoothie creamy and filling too.
- Lemon - gives this smoothie its refreshingly tangy, citrus taste.
- Spinach - a great source of vitamins K, A and C as well as containing calcium and iron.
Step by Step Instructions
One of the easiest, healthy raw food recipes you can make in the kitchen is a smoothie. Like I said, this one is made with simple, everyday ingredients.
This is my absolute favourite green smoothie and I can't wait to share it with you. Here are the step by step instructions:
Step 1. Chop ingredients
Step 2. Add to a blender or food processor
Step 3. Blend until smooth and creamy
Pour into a glass or two to serve
Substitutions
It’s easy to create variations of this green apple spinach smoothie by substituting ingredients, so it never gets boring. Here are some examples:
- Instead of spinach try using pak choi or rainbow chard. These are also light and mild tasting which makes them an easy choice for smoothies.
- Switch up the citrus flavour by swapping out the lemon with lime or orange.
- If you’re not a fan of bananas, try using frozen cauliflower pieces instead. Frozen cauliflower is also mild tasting and adds a creamy texture to smoothies.
- Chia seeds would make a great swap for the hemp seeds as they too are high in protein and omega-3’s. Just 1 tablespoon will work. Remember that chia seeds also help to thicken the smoothie so you may want to thin the smoothie out a little at the end by adding some more water.
- Swap water for coconut water or plant milk.
- Instead of ginger try fennel.
- Do you like superfood powders like maca or spirulina? Try adding them for extra nutritional goodness.
- To sweeten this apple spinach smoothie further you might want to add a date. Dates add a whole host of natural goodness as a sweetener. Just remember to remove the pit before popping it into the blender with the rest of your ingredients.
Storing
This spinach apple smoothie is best enjoyed straight away, or the same day, to benefit the most from the fresh raw ingredients.
If needed, it can be stored in the fridge for a few hours in a lidded container. The lemon juice will help to keep its beautiful bright green colour for a while.
This simple recipe is also great if you're a fan of weekly meal prep too! Just add your chopped ingredients to freezer bags in portion sizes, for use later as a frozen smoothie.
